Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:14

“Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.”

When we hear the word idolatry, we may picture a golden statue sitting on an altar. But idols don't always look like that.

An idol is anything that takes the place that belongs to God.

During the Sunday message, Pastor Ted pointed out that modern idols can take many forms. Something as ordinary as entertainment, possessions, money, hobbies, or technology can become an idol when it receives more of our attention, affection, time, or resources than God does.

The question isn't simply, “Is this thing sinful?”

A better question is, “Has this thing become more important to me than God?”

Israel created a golden calf because they wanted something they could see and control. They exchanged the living God for something of their own making.

We can make the same mistake without ever building a golden statue. We can create a life organized around comfort, entertainment, success, possessions, or our own desires—and gradually push God to the margins.

Paul doesn't tell us to negotiate with idolatry.

He says to flee.

Sometimes spiritual maturity means recognizing that something has gained too much influence in our lives and deliberately putting distance between ourselves and it.

Whatever competes with Christ for first place needs to be surrendered.

 An idol is anything I value more than I value Christ. What has first place in my life today?

Prayer:
 Father, search my heart and show me anything that has taken a place that belongs only to You. Give me courage to surrender whatever competes with You. Help me love You above my possessions, pleasures, plans, and preferences. May Christ truly have first place in my life. Amen.
